FAQs to Help You Feel Prepared

It’s common to have questions before starting therapy. These FAQs are here to give you clear, simple answers so you know what to expect and can feel more confident about taking the next step.

  • How do I know if I need therapy?

If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or struggling in relationships, therapy can help. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from professional support. Many people find therapy helpful for personal growth and developing better coping skills.

  • What should I expect in our first session?

Our first session will focus on understanding your concerns, goals, and history. I'll explain how I work and answer any questions you have about therapy. This is also your chance to see if we feel like a good fit for working together.

  • Do you accept insurance?

Yes, I accept insurance: BCBS (Carefirst, Anthem, FEP), United Healthcare, Sentara, Cigna

  • How does virtual therapy work?

We'll meet through SimplePractice's secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You'll need a private space with good internet connection. Virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person for most concerns, and many clients find it more convenient.

  • What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

I ask for 24 hours notice for cancellations to avoid a cancellation fee. I understand that life happens, and we can work together to find appointment times that work for your schedule.

  • What types of therapy do you use?

I use an integrative approach that may include CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), mindfulness-based techniques, person-centered therapy, solution-focused approaches, and strength-based counseling, depending on your needs and preferences.

  • What if my teen doesn't want to come to therapy?

It's common for teens to be hesitant about therapy initially. We can discuss strategies for helping your teen feel more comfortable with the idea, and I'm experienced in working with reluctant teens.

  • Is everything I say confidential?

Yes, with a few legal exceptions: if you're planning to harm yourself or someone else, if there's suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or if I'm court-ordered to release information. I'll always discuss any confidentiality concerns with you first when possible.
